The cargo terminal at Cat Bi Airport is designed to initially hold 100,000 tons of goods per year and has the potential to expand to 250,000 tons per year.
The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the cargo terminal at Cat Bi International Airport, marking a significant step in enhancing aviation transport infrastructure and fostering socio-economic development in Hai Phong and northern Vietnam.
The project involves a total investment of over 724 billion VND and an initial design capacity of 100,000 tons of cargo annually. The technical infrastructure is being developed comprehensively, with the potential for future expansion to handle up to 250,000 tons per year to meet the growing transportation demands as Hai Phong evolves into a major logistics hub in Vietnam. The terminal is expected to be operational by January 2026.
The project spans a total area of 86,776 m² and consists of three main components:
Cargo Terminal: Built on an area of 30,383 m², this section includes the cargo terminal, office spaces, auxiliary structures, and a technical system to support operations.
Parking Lot and Auxiliary Infrastructure: Covering 33,767 m², this area comprises a parking lot, internal traffic systems, landscaping, a driver’s lounge, security posts, and other facilities to ensure efficient and convenient operations.
Connecting Road: Spanning 22,626 m², this road links the cargo terminal to Hai Phong’s existing traffic network, improving circulation and connectivity with the regional transport system.

Mr Tran Anh Vu, ACV Deputy General Director, stated that the passenger terminal at Cat Bi International Airport has already exceeded its designed capacity of 2 million passengers per year. Without a dedicated cargo terminal, goods are currently handled at the old passenger terminal, causing inconvenience and additional costs. Notably, many types of goods still need to be transported to Noi Bai International Airport for shipment, increasing logistics time and costs while affecting Hai Phong's investment appeal.
The construction of the new cargo terminal will not only address the rising demand for freight transport but also enhance Cat Bi International Airport’s infrastructure. This development will facilitate the expansion of domestic and international routes, promote trade, strengthen economic connections between Hai Phong and other regions, and improve the local investment environment and living standards.
Mr Nguyen Duc Tho, Vice Chairman of the Hai Phong People’s Committee, affirmed that the investment in and upgrade of Cat Bi International Airport not only addresses immediate needs but also aligns with the Prime Minister's long-term strategy for developing aviation transportation.
