On November 17, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with José Serrador, Global Vice President of Embraer, the world’s third-largest commercial aircraft manufacturer.

During the meeting, Embraer’s leadership expressed strong interest in fostering comprehensive collaboration with Vietnam. The company outlined strategic plans, particularly for developing flight routes connecting Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Con Dao. Embraer also highlighted its intention to explore defense trade opportunities and showcase its products at the Vietnam International Defense Expo 2024.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh noted that Vietnam is actively pursuing new areas of development, including space exploration, underwater domains, and maritime initiatives. He emphasized Vietnam’s strategic geographic position, with a five-hour flight radius encompassing regions that account for approximately 60% of global GDP.

The Prime Minister also pointed to the growing global and domestic aviation demand, driven by rising incomes, improving living standards, and increasing international exchange and cooperation. He affirmed Vietnam’s aspiration to become a regional aviation hub and its eagerness to expand partnerships with leading global players like Embraer.

He encouraged Embraer to provide strategic advice for the development of Vietnam’s aviation sector and to continue discussions with Vietnamese partners to identify specific, mutually beneficial projects.

The Prime Minister also called on Embraer to assist Vietnamese airlines in building sustainable fleets, establishing training centers for personnel development, maintenance, and pilot training, and strengthening partnerships in technology transfer, defense trade, and search-and-rescue operations.

Embraer, the world’s third-largest commercial aircraft manufacturer after Airbus and Boeing, specializes in narrow-body airliners, military aircraft, and private jets.

Between 2020 and 2023, Bamboo Airways operated five Embraer aircraft in Vietnam. The company is currently in discussions with domestic partners to explore further collaboration opportunities.

Vietnam and Brazil established diplomatic relations in 1989 and upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive partnership in 2007. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached approximately $7.11 billion USD in 2022 and $5.8 billion USD in the first nine months of 2023. The Vietnamese community in Brazil consists of around 300 people, primarily residing in São Paulo.
