Computers, electronic products, and components reclaim top export spot

With export revenue reaching 36.32 billion USD, computers, electronic products, and components have surpassed phones to become the largest export group in the country.

Computers, electronic products, and components reclaim top export spot

According to the latest statistics from the General Department of Customs, from the beginning of the year to July 15, exports of computers, phones, and various components reached nearly 65.9 billion USD. Of this, computers, electronic products, and components accounted for 36.32 billion USD, while phones and components amounted to 29.57 billion USD.

Specifically, computers, electronic products, and components constituted 17.52% of the country’s total export revenue. Notably, computers, electronic products, and components had a significantly higher revenue compared to other product groups. The most apparent comparison is with phones and components, where the revenue gap has reached 6.75 billion USD (phones and components recorded 29.57 billion USD from the beginning of the year to July 15).

Conversely, in the first half of July, the import revenue of computers, electronic products, and components was nearly 5 billion USD, bringing the total import revenue of this group from the beginning of the year to July 15 to 54.3 billion USD.

Compared to the same period last year, the import revenue of this group increased by 28.4%, equivalent to over 12 billion USD, accounting for nearly 28% of the country’s total import revenue.

China and South Korea are the two largest markets for importing computers, electronic products, and components. These two major Asian markets alone accounted for approximately 30.77 billion USD, nearly 57% of the country’s total import revenue of computers, electronic products, and components.

Specifically, imports from China led with revenue of approximately 16 billion USD, a significant increase of 60% (equivalent to nearly 6 billion USD) compared to the same period in 2023. Imports from South Korea reached 14.77 billion USD, an increase of 18.16% compared to the same period last year (equivalent to an increase of 2.27 billion USD).

Notably, after many years of leading the country in export revenue, phones and components have recently lost this position to computers, electronic products, and components.

For instance, in 2023, computers, electronic products, and components led the country in export revenue with 57.32 billion USD, while phones and components reached 52.37 billion USD.

Since the beginning of 2024, the growth rate of computers, electronic products, and components has been higher than that of phones and components, thus widening the gap between these two groups.

According to economic experts, positive recovery signals in production and export are being maintained when looking at the foreign currency expenditure for importing machinery, equipment, and some key export-oriented product groups. Additionally, if the current export orders for the electronics sector are maintained, the import revenue of computers, electronic products, and components could likely reach the 100 billion USD mark.

In terms of export markets, both product groups have a diverse range of markets across five continents. The largest markets include the United States, China, and the EU.
