Vietnam remains among top investors in Cambodia

VOV.VN - Official data recently released by the Cambodian government reveals that Vietnam continued to secure its position among the top investing countries in Cambodia in 2024.

Vietnam remains among top investors in Cambodia

According to the annual report by the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) released earlier this week, Vietnam’s total investment reached approximately 550 million USD, accounting for 8.1% of approved projects in Cambodia in 2024. This places Vietnam behind China and a group of Cambodian investors from both domestic and overseas sources. At certain times, such as in November 2024, Vietnamese investment constituted over 51% of the total approved investment in Cambodia.

In terms of foreign direct investment (FDI) from various countries, Vietnam ranked second overall after China in 2024. It also topped the list of ASEAN countries investing in Cambodia, surpassing traditionally strong foreign investors in the region such as Singapore and Malaysia. Vietnam’s investment in Cambodia also exceeded that of Japan, South Korea, the U.S., and the United Kingdom.

With this impressive achievement, the total value of Vietnam's cumulative investment in Cambodia has reached about 3.5 billion USD, maintaining the leading position in ASEAN and being among the top 5 countries with the largest total direct investment in Cambodia to date. Vietnamese investment primarily focuses on sectors such as agriculture, finance, banking, insurance, and telecommunications. These activities contribute significantly to Cambodia's socio-economic development, improve living standards, increase budget revenue, promote infrastructure development, and create jobs for tens of thousands of Cambodian workers.

During his visit to Cambodia in July 2024, General Secretary To Lam (then serving as President) noted the significant transformation in Vietnam’s investment activities in Cambodia.

China remained Cambodia’s largest foreign investor in 2024, accounting for nearly 50% of total FDI, with a value of 3.43 billion USD. However, this proportion marked a substantial decline compared to the 66% share China held in 2023.

Export-oriented manufacturing industries remained the top FDI attraction in Cambodia last year, with 394 projects accounting for 95% of total investment. This was followed by agriculture and tourism sectors.
