On the evening of December 13, 2024, Unit 2 of the Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion Project was successfully connected to the national grid, completing its integration 18 days earlier than planned.
The Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion Project, invested in by Vietnam Electricity (EVN), is a national key project that commenced construction in mid-2021. Designed with a capacity of 360 MW and comprising two generating units, the project is managed by the EVN Power Project Management Board 2 (EVNPMB2) as the investor's representative, with consulting and design provided by Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 1.
According to EVNPMB2 representatives, the project faced numerous challenges during its implementation, including the COVID-19 pandemic, rising material costs due to global geopolitical conflicts, and delays in site clearance procedures. However, thanks to the close oversight and direction from EVN, along with significant efforts from EVN-affiliated teams, consulting units, and construction and equipment suppliers, the project was completed ahead of schedule.
Innovative construction solutions played a critical role in the project’s success, particularly the simultaneous assembly of the rotors for Units 1 and 2. The project also adopted a parallel implementation layout for both units, operating on a three-shift schedule daily, including weekends and public holidays. This strategy proved pivotal in accelerating the commissioning of Unit 2 immediately after Unit 1, achieving an 18-day advancement and reducing the overall timeline by approximately three months compared to standard practices.
Once operational, the plant will enhance electricity generation capacity for the national grid, especially during peak hours, improve the overall economic operation of the power system, and optimize water resource utilization. It is expected to increase the plant’s annual electricity output by approximately 233 million kWh. Additionally, the project will help reduce CO2 emissions, decrease the workload and operating hours of existing units, extend the lifespan of equipment, and lower maintenance and repair costs.
The moment Unit 2 was successfully connected to the grid
Earlier, on November 26, 2024, Unit 1 of the Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion Project was successfully connected to the national grid. The subsequent early connection of Unit 2 by 18 days reflects the relentless dedication of EVNPMB2 and related units, marking a significant achievement in celebration of the 70th anniversary of Vietnam’s electricity sector (December 21, 1954 - December 21, 2024).
