Unit 1 of Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion successfully connected to national grid

On November 26, at 4:38 a.m., Unit 1, with a capacity of 180 MW, of the Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion Project was successfully connected to Vietnam’s national electricity grid.

Unit 2 has completed 99% of its equipment installation and is expected to connect to the grid by December 21, 2024, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of Vietnam’s Electricity Sector (December 21, 1954 – December 21, 2024).

The Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion Project consists of two units with a total designed capacity of 360 MW. The project was developed by Vietnam Electricity (EVN), with EVN’s Project Management Board 2 (EVNPMB2) serving as the representative investor.

Electricity Construction Consulting Company No. 1 provided design consultancy across various project phases, while EVNPMB2 oversaw construction. Equipment installation was carried out with support from Ialy Hydropower Company and EVN’s Repair Service Center.

Once fully operational, the expanded Ialy Hydropower Plant will boost power supply capacity for the southern region, particularly during peak hours.

The project aims to improve the operational efficiency of the national power system by increasing peak load coverage, operational flexibility, and system reliability and safety. These enhancements will also reduce production costs across the power system.

Moreover, the plant will optimize water flow utilization by minimizing annual water spillage, contributing an additional average electricity output of approximately 233.2 million kWh per year.

The project is expected to cut annual fuel costs, lower CO2 emissions, and decrease reliance on fossil fuels. By reducing the workload and operational intensity of existing units, the expansion will extend equipment lifespan and save on maintenance and repair costs.

Construction of the Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion Project, developed by EVN, began in June 2021 with a total investment of nearly 6.4 trillion VND.

The project is located in Ya Tang Commune, Sa Thay District, Kon Tum Province, as well as Ia Mo Nong and Ia Kreng Communes and Ialy Town in Chu Pah District, Gia Lai Province.
